The town Wieliczka is 14 km south-east of Krakow. Thanks to the salt mine, Wieliczka is known all over the world.
The salt from the surface mines was manufactured here 3 500 years BCE, whereas the beginnings of the excavation of rock salt date back to the 13th century. The ancient mine is one of the best-known tourist sites in Poland.
Mine is an underground city. Many people are taken aback by how huge the Mine is. Across centuries, 26 shafts were dug. On nine levels, at the depth between 57 and 327 m, over 2000 chambers and almost 300 km of galleries were bored.
It is a world-class monument, featuring among twelve objects on the UNESCO's World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. The Tourist Route attract and enrapture over one million visitors travelling every year from different parts of the world.
The two-kilometre tourist route enables you to visit 22 chambers. The underground Wieliczka Salt Mine boasts kilometres of walkways and ramps, magnificent chambers, lakes and breathtaking salt statues.
The most famous stop on the route is St. Kinga's Chapel- bored in the 18th century, has functioned as an underground sanctuary since the 19th century. St. Kinga Chapel with its magnificent chandeliers of salt, is truly impressive. The picturesque underground lakes are located in the Weimar, Erazm Baracz and Józef Piłsudski Chambers.
Tourists admire well-preserved mining chambers, ancient mining tools and machines. The mine illustrates over 700 years of history of Polish salt mining.
There is an alternative spa, situated 135 m underground, where the microclimate serves to treat respiratory diseases, allergies, skin diseases and metabolic disorders.
