The German concentration camp in Lublin (called Majdanek) was initiated by Heinrich Himmler’s decision in 1941 and was initially called Kriegsgefangenenlager der Waffen SS Lublin – a camp for prisoners of war. In February 1943 it was renamed Konzentrationslager Lublin – a concentration camp.
Majdanek is situated in the south-east suburbs of Lublin. Prisoners came from nearly 30 countries. Polish citizens dominated (mainly Poles and Jews)
The tragic history of the Lublin concentration camp came to an end on 23rd July 1944 after the Red Army entered the city.
On the partly preserved grounds of the former concentration camp, there are 70 historical buildings from the years 1941-1944.
The Mausoleum, the Monument- Gate at the entrance to the Museum,
and the Road of the Homage and Remembrance that connects them create the Monument to Struggle and Martyrdom at Majdanek.

The Monument- Gate
The principal component of the monument alludes to the Gate of Hell in Dante's Divine Comedy
Before it is concavity of symbolizing the abyss of the camp.
The dates of the German occupation of Lublin from 1939- 1944 are carved into six votive candles

The Mausoleum
The Monuments to Struggle and Martyrdom, commemorating the victims of the camp was elected in 1969.
It was designed by a sculptor Wiktor Tołkin and engineer Janusz Dembek.
Along the copula runs text reading "Our fate is a warning to you" from F. Fenikowski's poem Requiem.
It has the shape of a Slavic urn in which remains of Majdanek prisoners have been placed.
